For the first time since 2008, the Mustangs stood atop the podium at the conference golf tournament on May 17.  The team managed to pull out a tight two-stroke victory over Gull Lake.

Since 2008, the Battle Creek Lakeview Trojans have won nine straight SMAC conference titles, but this year Portage Central claimed the title. “We were better than I expected us to be in March,” Coach Scott Taylor said, “We had players step up and improve throughout the season, and Will Anderson stepped in as freshman and put up scores like Jared Lyons did the previous three years.”

With six of eight golfers from this year’s team returning, the Mustangs hope to repeat this year’s accomplishments and more by qualifying for the state championships.

“We played to our average for regionals,” Taylor said. “We needed to play just a bit better though.   We missed by two shots.   All of the players could find at least one that got away.”

Upcoming for the Mustang golf team, they play the Celery Cup against Northern on June 7 at the moors.  In the 2018 season the Mustangs could be a force to be reckoned with at the conference and state level.
