The men’s swimming and diving team is splashing its way to victory this season. With an undefeated season and the title of “conference champions,” the team brought home three record-breaking titles including the 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

Junior Ferris Ghazal is an all-conference champion who has been swimming for eight years.

“Although the season is almost over, we did very good for how small our team was at conferences,” Ghazal said. “More people should join [the swimming team] because it’s very competitive, and we could always use more kids.”

At the SMAC meet, the team took second place and the title of co-champions, sharing it with Loy Norrix. Ghazal says the tie resulted from the team not having enough depth.

According to sophomore Sam Webber, everyone on the team has dropped time and has dramatically improved since the beginning of the season.

This weekend, six qualified team members will be moving on to the state meet on March 10 and 11, including sophomore Jack Liu. Filled with many accomplishments, Liu placed in the top six for all of his events at SMAC and achieved a state qualifying time in the 100 butterfly. His time ranks in the top 10 in Portage Central history.

The team’s hope for next season is to beat personal time, take first place at SMAC and have the entire team qualify for states.
