The DECA Team traveled to Detroit for the State Career Conference the weekend of March 10, and four students received medals as finalists in their event. The team of seniors Andrew Beering, David Street, and Spencer Libbing also qualified to attend the National Conference in Anaheim, Calif., in April.

Street and Beering participated in “Travel and Tourism Decision Making” at Districts, qualifying for the state competition, and later switching to the “Leadership and Teamwork” event, which was the one that Beering, Street and Libbing all qualified for nationals in as a group. Their team was the first from Portage Central to make it to nationals, according to team member Alyson Koh, who competed in the “Business Services Marketing” individual series event.

For Street and Libbing, this season was the first they participated in, and it was Beering’s third year of competing.

“We’re all [planning on] ending up in business [in the future], so [DECA] was a good start,” Beering said.

The three of them will be traveling to Anaheim to compete from April 26 to 29.
