On Dec. 9, the Portage Central cheer team became the Grand Champions at the CCCAM Scholarship Invitational by showing off their abilities to work and communicate effectively with one another.

In the competition, the girls scored 217 points in round one, 196 in round two, and 280 points in round three, adding up to a grand total of 694 points by the end of the competition, which is considered a very high score.

Most do not know what it’s like to be in a cheer competition or what it’s like to even be present at one. For senior Anissa Fontanilla, competitions are about not only supporting yourself, but supporting others as well.

“We warm up before each round and we always cheer on other teams in the competition,” Fontanilla said. “And in between rounds if we have time, we always try to fill up on food and stay energized.”

Like any competitive sport, there are certain hardships specific to that activity. According to Fontanilla, the hardest point about this year’s competition season was the fact that the more experienced leaders were required to show how things worked to the especially large number of new team members. The new girls were also required to dedicate lots of effort to keep their position in a round.

Since these girls have to be synchronized in all of their movements, long practice times are essential. They practice roughly 12 hours a week, including gymnastics and the time spent on the mat.

Belonging to a group of individuals that share a common interest is a special thing for these girls, as they go through a lot as a team. Senior Emma Mckillop enjoyed her time on the cheer team more than anyone could imagine.

“Cheer is a very motivating sport and it’s a team effort that everyone is involved in,” Mckillop said. “When I’m at cheer, all of my worries disappear and I’m only focused on what’s important.”Courtesy of Anissa Fontanilla
