When it comes to finding a roommate, there is a lot of chance involved. Regardless of finding someone online, you always run the risk of ending up with a bad roommate. Meeting someone online is already shady enough. That is why I decided to go in blind for a roommate.
A large reason I decided to go in blind for a roommate was because I am going to Montana State University. I don’t know anyone in Montana besides my relatives, so going in blind seemed like the best option for me.
The idea of moving in with someone you don’t even know sounds scary, but universities try to find someone who is a good match for you. A lot of universities offer surveys to get to know you better to find a good match for you. For example, it usually asks you what time you wake up in the morning. This way if you like waking up at noon, you won’t have someone else waking you up at 6 am.
Many colleges also release your roommate’s name before you actually go to school. This gives you plenty of time to get to know them in the summer and if you have a huge problem, you could always ask for a change in roommates.
Another great thing about going in blind for roommates is getting the chance to meet someone new. Sometimes opposites really do attract. Who knows, you might meet someone online exactly like you, but you end up losing your mind because they’re driving you crazy.
After going into it, going in blind really isn’t going in blind, it’s just going in with a little less knowledge than going in with a set roommate. You are still provided lots of opportunities to meet and talk with each other, you just don’t know who they are yet.
I think this way of finding a roommate is way less stressful. You don’t have to worry about rejecting people who weren’t a good fit for you on Facebook or saying no to friends of yours that are going to the same school.
Yes, I might be a little old fashioned for wanting to get a roommate at random. Most of our parents went in blind for roommates and they still met amazing people. It’s always been risky. For example, my mom went in blind and had a roommate take her car for weeks without permission. However, she also had a roommate that’s one of her best friends that she still talks to even now.
I’ve never really been a person to believe in fate or to leave hard decisions up to chance. Despite that, I think going in blind for a roommate is the best option.
